I think you missed the part where he said the guy AFFECTIONATELY called Dr. B
the diet Nazi. $6,000 does not sound like a whole lot to me for 3
consultations consisting of 13 hours with such a celebrity doctor, a battery of
medical
tests, and meal planning. But for a regular doctor around town, that would
be an outrageous price.
Perhaps Dr. B is unaware of his receptionist’s method of dealing with people,
and if she’s truly like that all the time, it should be brought to his
attention. Or perhaps you caught her on a really bad day. Or perhaps you
weren’t
in the best mood when you called her… sometimes I transfer my frustration
onto other people without meaning to, and think they are the meanies.
Have you ever seen Dr. B on the diabetes show he is on sometimes? I think
it’s called Your d-life, something like that. He looks and sounds very laid
back, soft spoken, extremely pleasant, almost nerd like. Although he’s living

proof of what he’s preached for so long, on a particular day that I was
watching, the lady who was hosting the show that day came right out and somewhat
forcefully said she didn’t believe him on something. He just smiled pleasantly
and
didn’t even argue.

When I called Bernsteins office , I was really put
off by the woman who answered the phone , who
afterwards I referred to as "Nurse Rachet" . She was
almost unpleasant . Why would Bernstein have someone
like that fronting the store? So when you say "diet
Nazi", I get the feeling it might be true .
She seemed defensive . I was just making inquiries.
She had not heard of Sergei Boutenko(Raw family) , and
maybe also was unfamiliar with the raw foods movement
, even tho Bernsteins low carb high veg diet would
seem to point towards that idea , if he could connect
the dots with what is going on out there now eg with
Gabriel Cousens work at the TRee of Life Center .
Any way I was told bluntly that it would cost
somewhere in the region of $6,000 dollars for 13 hours

of consult time . This would be broken up into 3
sessions . I asked for a brochure , or a price guide -
something official in the mail, and she said there was
nothing ; she would have to just write up her quote
and send it to me . My daughter and I would drive up
for the day for these sessions or stay in a hotel etc
if necessary. The "treatment" would start with a
battery of medical tests , followed by meal planning ,
Did I think I could do it/ commit to it ? !!! Kind of
using a parents desperation as the hard sell. I felt
pretty sick.
I bought his book . A lot of it made sense , but so
does the idea of just eating a lot of raw veg , whole
foods , and cutting out all processed foods, esp pasta
, cookies , cakes, bread , potatoes etc.
I was frankly horrified at the lack of phone skills/
finesse or diplomacy/concern of his receptionist , the
huge cost , and the possibility of traumatizing my
recently diagnozed type 1 daughter , and setting her
back , by hooking her up with a potentially rigid , as
you say "Nazi" experience .

I envy anybody who has seen Dr. B.
BUT I thought the very low carb diet was designed to get you off
drugs, including insulin.

I think Dr. B got himself off insulin, did he not?

As for Dr. B’s license being in danger, I wonder if he
had established a system of docs who use his protocol,
based on their observation of its success,
if he might have more clout and be less in danger
of being ganged up on by the AMA who pushes the ADA diet.

I have read that if
you call his office for a referral, you are told that he is the
only one who does what he does, and his office does not do
