Are you saying that he claims that microwaves are worse than they really
are?

I did a search for "homeopaths" on mercola.com and didn’t notice any
statements about homeopaths that I perceived as negative. Do you remember
any more specifics about what he said or how he misrepresented what
homeopaths know?
I don’t think he has/takes time to thoroughly research most of what he puts
on his website, and he’s into promoting products he sells or is affiliated
with, but I find that he comes out on the right side on the vast majority of

Microwaves are harmless; they just make food hot

The most in the know health advocate that I know will not use
microwaves and this goes back 12 years since I have known him. He
often is far ahead of the curve on health matters, usually 10-20 years
ahead of the corraborative science. He claims that the microwaving
process denatures the food in ways that heat alone cannot do. The
scientist cited in the Nexus article has similar views. I have read
other things over the years to support these views.
If there is any question, it seems we must avoid microwaving to
maintain optimal health. But we also need to do so many other things
that we tend to not want to do. For example: It appears that desert
is officially a food group in our society. Sugar is a reward for
doing something good. This, even when the literature on the poisonous
effects of sugar is massive.
Hey, I’ve heard a microwaved snicker’s bar on top of ice cream is to
die for. To die for sure.
All the best,

Oh please don’t start this old wives tale up again:-)
It is sooooooo old and worn out…

So he is at least 12 yrs out of date then?

Microwaves ARE heat alone:-))
Which is why he just "claims" it blindly rather than looking into it
scientifically.
The woman who died from cooked blood in 1991 would have died from cooked
blood no matter how it was cooked. That does not make the cooking method
bad - it makes the act of cooking blood a really really bad idea!
Duh!
It’s always some non-scientist who doesn’t have a handle on atoms,
physics, chemistry or anything else relevant, who comes up with these
old wives tales based on gut feelings or whatever they use - there’s nor
even any common sense never mind science in it.
Take this little story listed for example:
"Hans Hertel is the first scientist to conceive of and carry out a
quality study on the effects of microwaved nutrients on the blood and
physiology of human beings….
"To control as many variables as possible, we selected eight individuals
who were strict macrobiotic diet participants from the Macrobiotic
Institute at Kientel, Switzerland," Hertel explained. "We were all
housed in the same hotel environment for eight weeks. There was no
smoking, no alcohol and no sex."
Does anyone in their right mind think that whether they had sex will
affect how heat cooks their food that day?
The variables he SHOULD have controlled (but did not) and would have
controlled if he knew anything at all about scientific method -
are the ones to do with food contamination from cookware, plastic wraps
etc. Those are the only things ever implicated in problems with
microwaved food. If you heated those containers in a regular oven they
would also leach toxins into the food. Adding toxins to the food from
melted plastic does not make microwaves bad - or any other heating
method bad - it just makes the food container bad.
And so on and so on…..
Please stop spreading all this old nonsense!!!!!!!
Microwaves heat thing, no more no less.
If you use a microwave (or any other heat source), make sure you use
cookware designed for the cooking method to avoid leaching everything
from lead in stoneware to PCBs in plastic, into your food.
This "scientist" then invents more assumptions that are unfounded and
irresponsible - he expects you to take his word for it I guess:
"There is extensive scientific literature concerning the hazardous
effects of direct microwave radiation on living systems," Hertel
continued." Well strange - but he cites none (because there is none.)
The guy has zero physics and doesn’t understand the difference between
various sources of energy such as from the sun, radio waves and
microwaves (which are more like your TV reception) - but he happily
espouses on the subject anyway based on his erroneous assumptions!!!
Fortunately someone noticed he was talking a lot of nonsense and gagged
him, lest he do a lot more damage than he’s done already with his
invented objections that most people do not know enough to refute. It
does need some high school chemistry and physics after all…..
Unfortunately some people are still bringing up the nonsense to rehash
over and over again…….
Claim:
"This preliminary study suggests that microwaving human milk could be
detrimental."
The study (the real one not this line of it removed from it) explains
that overheating breast milk cooks it and that’s not good (whatever
method you use to cook it.)
Finally - as you can see, nobody actually puts their name (or date) to
this so-called article that is so full of irresponsible and known to be
invalid claims. A responsible person would have checked it out first
before publishing it.
In fact there are no research studies that can provide any evidence of
these theories as microwaves are well understood phenomena and it’s like
asking a motorcycle to fly, to ask microwaves to do something other than
make a specific category of things warmer:-)
Let’s get real!!!
Namaste,

Please present some proof, article, or some sort of information to
refute the scientist’s findings from this article.
You make many statements based upon your opinion. Please do not try
to advocate for something just because you use it. The points that
the article make are interesting. Your assumption that the food was
contaminated in the cooking process is an assumption.
The natural healing institutes around this world that routinely cure
all types of disease, do so primarily with a "live food diet." IE.
No cooking. No cooking for many reasons, but mainly to leave the
food and it’s enzymes and nutritional content as intact and
available as possible. We know that cooking destroys enzymes, so we
know that microwaving will also do this. The article in question
makes a case for less detriment caused by conventional cooking than
from microwave, and the best response from raw. These finding
correlate with what natural healers have been espousing for
centuries.
About the article, it did seem strange that the sexual activity of
the participants would be a control, I agree. Possilby it was a
control because they were looking at the blood of the tested
individuals after consuming the food samples and sexual activity
might have an effect on the blood stream. It might cause stress
relief, or infection, or even possibly drop the immune systems
strength or even strengthen it, who knows.
What if the microwave is really harming the food and changing it
into a very difficult or impossible to digest substance? For years
DDT was said to be "a safe and effective aid to gardening." In the
50’s they even did a promo film where school children were sitting
in a fog of DDT while they ate their school lunches. DDT was lauded
as "so safe your children can eat in it!" Now we think differently.
Bottom line is you really don’t know. If you don’t know, does it
not make sense to err on the side of caution? Yes microwaves are
convenient, but so is your health.

He was no scientist - he had no findings, YOU presented no science to
refute:-))

Irene,
It states in the article that the man is a "scientist."(see below)
It also explains what his background is. It seems obvious you did
not read the article.
If you want to use a microwave, please by all means do. Others on
this list might want to consider the possibility that microwaves are
harmful and make up there own minds.
If this is "not worth your time," then please stop with your angry
attacks. This is simply information, take it or leave it. You seem
so attached because you obviously use microwaves so much. The
soviets banned microwave use in the mid 70’s, ever consider why?
The second article explains in great detail why. Also what should
be of concern to you is the increase in cancer causing substances
cited in microwaved foods, since you claim to be dealing with this
issue.
Why the anger? I’m frankly sick of it. It is getting old. Leave
the list if ideas outside of your own are so upsetting.

From the first article:
HANS HERTEL
In the tiny town of Wattenwil, near Basel in Switzerland, there
lives a scientist who is alarmed at the lack of purity and
naturalness in the many pursuits of modern mankind. He worked as a
food scientist for several years with one of the many major Swiss
food companies that do business on a global scale. A few years ago,
he was fired from his job for questioning procedures in processing
food because they denatured it.
"The world needs our help," Hans Hertel told Tom Valentine as they
shared a fine meal at a resort hotel in Todtmoss, Germany.
"We, the scientists, carry the main responsibility for the present
unacceptable conditions. It is therefore our job to correct the
situation and bring the remedy to the world. I am striving to bring
man and techniques back into harmony with nature. We can have
wonderful technologies without violating nature."
Hans is an intense man, driven by personal knowledge of violations
of nature by corporate man and his state-supported monopolies in
science, technology and education. At the same time, as the two
talked, his intensity shattered into a warm smile and he spoke of
the way things could be if mankind’s immense talent were to work
with nature and not against her.
Hans Hertel is the first scientist to conceive of and carry out a
quality study on the effects of microwaved nutrients on the blood
and physiology of human beings. This small but well-controlled study
pointed the firm finger at a degenerative force of microwave ovens
and the food produced in them. The conclusion was clear: microwave
cooking changed the nutrients so that changes took place in the
participants’ blood; these were not healthy changes but were changes
that could cause deterioration in the human systems.
Working with Bernard H. Blanc of the Swiss Federal Institute of
Technology and the University Institute for Biochemistry, Hertel not
only conceived of the study and carried it out, he was one of eight
participants.
