My Diabetes Cured (Remission)

This group is about sharing experience for cruing Diabetes. I’d like
to share my situation and where I am now. I’m not advocating my
method for curing diabetes since I don’t believe that it is for
everyone. Each person is different and has their own situation. But
I wanted to share what happened to me and my diabetes.

I was a Type II 4 shot a day insulin dependent diabetic and on oral
meds for almost 10 years. My A1C was usually over 9 most of the
time, and when I was fortunate, I got it down to a controllable 7 or
8. I was between about 80 and 100 lbs overweight.
I monitored several times a day, and counted carbs. I went to
classes to get educated and I read everything that I could on
diabetes. It was an ongoing struggle as it is for most diabetics.
I had heard stories that people who went through weight loss surgery
(gastric bypass) were getting their diabetes cured. At almost 100

lbs overweight, I didn’t think that I needed the surgery to loose
weight. But after much research, I decided that it would be
beneficial to me from a health point and not a vanity point.
I also had high blood pressure, cholesterol and sleep apnea. I knew
that loosing weight would help with my diabetes control. I had the
Doudenal Switch procedure of weight loss surgery in August of 2003.
In preparation for the surgery, I had to fast for 2 days before
surgery. Even with the fasting, my blood sugars were running over
150 -200. Since the day of surgery, I have been off insulin, and all
oral medications for diabetes and cholesterol, and high blood
pressure. I still check my blood sugars and monitor myself, but I’ve
maintained a Hemoglobin A1C of 5.0 or lower for over 1 year now. My
doctor wrote on my chart "Diabetes Cured". I still can’t believe it.

I know that this may not be forever, and that will always have to
watch to see how my body reacts to sugar. But I feel that I’ve given
myself a few more years of health. Like I said at the beginning, I’m
not advocating this method for everyone, but I wanted to share it
because some of you may want to explore this option. I am willing to
share any part of my this experience with anyone who asks. Nothing
is to personal for me to share.

Thank you
Ozzie
