Re: Digest Number 987
. I don’t feel comfortable
bringing him home because I know he’s not going to do the right
things. The doctor has even said that he’s terminal and that he’s
going to die if he comes home. We are trying to stall him coming
home until after the holidays. I have no clue what to do.
Any suggestions?

Hi Shortie, my apologies for not referring to you by name, but you ommitted it.
I do have a couple of suggestions.
First, and most important…Get yourself counseling, right away. This is a huge
burdon for a 23 year old; taking care of a 14 year old and a beligerant
diabetic. Most kids your age are letting loose and enjoying their youth. You
need to find out how to create a balance in your life and I don’t think you can
do it on your own, or by asking advice from us. You need someone to talk to,
daily if need be.
Second, if you DO take on this life, don’t bring white fluffy foods into the
house. If its not there he won’t eat it. Fill the larder with vegetables and
low Glycemic Load foods. Try to make a mashed potato, pasta or rice meal a thing
of the past. That way when he splurges it will be rarer. Remember also that a
diabetic diet is counter-intuitive. A pound of raw bacon is better for him than
a cup of strawberries. See if you can get him to drink green tea daily, and
butchers broom may possibly be snuck into his diet as a regular herb if does not
take his meds. You need to educate yourself on this.
I wish I could offer you more, but you need the counseling first before you make
any other decisions. Go to your social services, or ask your fathers Dr. for a
reference.
Good luck and God bless,
Chris.
My father is a 47 year old diabetic who has been noncompliant for
about fifteen years (basically since diagnosis). He is currently in
a nursing home. He is on the following meds:
1. Demadex
2. Protonix
3. Plavix
4. Tetracylcine
5. Cardizem CD
6. Sodium Bicarbonate
7. Zarozyline
8. Feasal
9. Celexa
10. Insulin
11. Procrit
Forgive me on the spelling of these.
He is on the following dietary restrictions:
1. Diabetic Diet
2. Low Sodium
3. Fluid Restriction – 1ltr a day
4. Potassium Restriction – 1 gram a day
He is on Medicaid. The social worker is working on a discharge plan
for him. He is going to be evaluated tomorrow by a home care
agency. They say I would only get a nurse once a week but I would
get Aids every day. I could also call and a nurse would come if I
have trouble with him.
At home his sugar always runs high. We have a meter that goes up to
600 and the hope is that we can get a reading on the meter. The
higher his sugar is the more moody and nasty he is. It is me (I’m
23) and my 14yr old brother at home
A Grassroot Movement is like a lawn; there is a bigger picture we all like to
see…. but underneath there are many small roots. Each root has an influence
on the entire picture. We too can have an effect, we just need to figure out
the efficient way to do it.
