i am going to my doctor tomorrow, and i think he will put me on lantus. i
have heard that you can get lows with this. a lady that i know told me that her
doctor would not put her on it because she would have lows. i have had so
many lows in the past with nph and some regular that i am very anxious about
it.
iam on 4 small shots of nph per day plus humolog at meals. it is a lot of
shots, and was working ok, but i am having a lot of highs.again i was told
that i was a type 2 twenty two years ago, but probably a 11/2. i do make a
little insulin still. have you experienced many lows using lantus?. i hate
having one. guess we all do. i would love your help . thanks, ellen.

Yes, Ellen, after 35 years of insulin use, you can bet I’ve had more
than plenty of lows. I too hate them and find them the most scary
unpleasant part of the whole deal. I had more trouble with lows on
NPH, and if you were taking overlapping small shots, as you say, I
can see where you’d have some extra trouble that way. You may like
the Lantus better. I sure do. It works steadily and at a low level
all 24 hours. You only have overlap if you take your shot earlier or
later one day than the next. There are ways to deal with that too, if
it happens.
When I started on Lantus, the night period was my greatest concern,
as I had come close to shock a couple of times from lows while
sleeping (on NPH). So I tried to adjust the lantus dose such that my
sugar was the same in the morning as it had been at bedtime the night
before. I didn’t worry if the # was high (and it was) at
first, ‘Same’ is the important word. Once I got that figured (-turned
out to be 7 and 1/2 units-never had tried to do half units before,
but that’s what it is) I started adjusting day time regular insulin
doses before meals - First, aiming to stay in the 2 and 300’s (I
know, that sounds terribly high, but if I get too perfectionistic too
fast, I just give up and go off entirely when I make a mistake!
Personality thing. Oh well) Next I moved to 100’s and 200’s, and now
I’m working on 90’s and one hundreds mostly. Still not perfect, but I
feel so much better and this system leaves me good flexibility on
what and when I eat. I hope this helps. -Linda R
