Kat, can I ask you 2 questions. I dont understand what you mean. I know its
easy to lose weight when you eat low carb, but how do also you lose weight
when you eat too many carbs and sugar goes out of control? I always gain weight
fast eating carbs and with high bsl.
and also did you start taking medicine for hypothyroid and did you feet stop
hurting when-if you did ?

Hi,
Yes, my feet did finally stop hurting after being on Armour Thyroid. I was
initially on Synthroid for about a year that did nothing to relieve the pains.
After switching to Armour, I felt a lot better. After the diagnoses of diabetes,
I stopped the thyroid drugs thinking that it was raising my sugar levels. I
actually stopped taking it for several months and did not get the pain back in
my feet although I have pains in my legs, arms and the middle of my back. I have
started again on the Armour to see if it will help these pains.
Diabetes seems to have different effects on people and may be related to
different ways people have developed the disease. I have the symptoms of type 1
diabetes. I need insulin to lower my levels and I have from day 1. If I do not
eat low carb, I go into anywhere from 400 to 600. If I stay over 200 for a few
days, I begin to lose weight. I think it is like starvation because my body does
not process any nutrients at this level. They say that most type 2s have a
problem with over weight and type 1s do not. I developed diabetes (or so I was
told) at age 48. This would seem to be type 2 but my symptoms are that of type
1. For three weeks prior to the diagnoses, I had symptoms of heavy thirst,
constant hunger and drastic weight loss. Growing up as a skinny girl, the last
several years of weighing 160-165 lbs did not bother me. In that 3 week period I
lost down to 135 lbs. I continued to lose more while trying to figure out what
my body needed and I am struggling now to not drop more
weight. If I get my levels close to being under control, I can put on 5 lbs
until of course, they go out of control again. So I now weigh 120 and can
sometimes get up to 125 lbs. I went from a size 12 to a size 2 in about 6
months.
I think part of the problem in finding a cure for diabetes is that people have
developed this from different reasons. I do know that my pancreas does still
work although it does not produce a lot. If I stayed on the adkins diet, and ate
very little, I would not have to take insulin. I’ve also found that a bike ride
for about 45 minutes will also lower my levels. I am at my worst when I first
get up in the morning. It seems my liver works overtime while I am sleeping.
I can’t tell you exactly why I am losing weight while high but maybe someone
else on this site can help. I relate it to the starvation of nutrients that my
body is not able to process.

Hi Kat - Maybe you are type-1. If your BS stays high when you don’t
use insulin, and oral agents don’t work on you, seems to me you would
be type-1. My grandfather became a type-1 diabetic at the age of
60…The rule is that it appears at a young age, 16 in my case, but
the rule has exceptions. Maybe you are one. Did your thyroid
dysfunction precede the diabetes or vica-versa?
-AS to losing weght when your sugar is high, i too experience that. I
figure the calories are spilling into my urine in the form of
glucose, and since I don’t have enough circulating insulin to let it
into my cells (as storage or for energy), my body starts burning fat
through other metabolic pathways (-the ones that result in acid build
up, and that would eventually cause acidosis, coma) This doesn’t

Hi Linda,
Yes I do wonder if I am not type 1. I have read a lot about the pancreas giving
out after a person has been a diabetic for a long time. Mine came on with a
vengence and stayed there. I was hypo for about 4 years prior to the diabetes
and have been diabetic for a little over a year. I have friends that are
diabetic and they take glucopahase. It seems for them, they can have the
recommended diet by the ADA and stay under 125 at their worst readings. I avoid
the ADA diet and struggle taking insulin to stay under 200.
I did think that maybe I was wrong and should listen to the ADA diet so I gave
it a try. Boy was that a mistake. 200 looked good while I tried a couple of
weeks of that diet. Now I’m back to the low carb sites and recipes and along
with lots of exercise, I am slowly going back down.

really explain it. Just my two cents from many years spent on the BS
roller coaster. -Linda
