Re: [Fwd: [MSCSW] Alcohol & Diabetes
> Awhile back, some body emailed about her diabetic husband drinking.
I stayed confused about alcohol and diabetes for a long time, then gave it up
because I couldn’t understand it. They say alcohol lowers your blood sugar
– which would be a good thing, wouldn’t it? I’m talking about in total
moderation, not for people with a drinking problem. I’ve never been a
drinker, so I experimented with some red wine, but couldn’t tell any
difference at all in my bs. I have read that the reason people over in the
mediterranean (or wheverer it is where they eat a lot of pasta) have no
diabetes and low incidence of heart trouble is due to the alcohol which they
drink with both lunch and dinner … that it counteracts the effects of the
pasta on blood sugar. Anyone agree/disagree?

I tried the alcohol for a while. At first, I made a delicious Margarita. (Shows
Kathy
how dumb I was with sugar). My bs shot up to 600 immediately. I then went to
drinking red wine before bedtime. They say you are actually suppose to drink it
with meals. I did have some lower bs readings but it seemed to go higher several
hours later. I have read where your liver stops making glucose while it has to
process the alcohol out of your blood. They say that when the alcohol hits your
system, the liver reacts by seeing poison and uses all of its ability to process
the poison out of the system. If the Margaritas would have worked, I could have
hung with that.
