Just diagnosed

Thursday, June 12th, 2003

Hello new listmates,
I am 33 and newly diagnosed with type 1 (they think). My test
results show that I am producing some insulin but my blood sugars
have
not stabalized using glucotrol and glucophage alone (I was over 500
when they initially tested me in the office- now I stay in the low
200’s). I am scheduled to start insulin this Friday. I have no
anti-bodies to insulin.
I’m writing to ask for help with some diet questions. I am quite
experienced with negotiating diet/supplements as my son has a
metabolic/immune disorder. I’m very confused however as what diet is
best for diabetes. I’m reading wonderful stuff about high protein
and
low carbs from Dr. Bernstein and Dr. Atkins. My doctor is
discouraging this because I have ketones and ketosis is a common

New member with a question or two

Thursday, June 12th, 2003

I’ve just joined this group. My husband is a 67 year old diabetic who
was diagnosed at age 31 and went on insulin 20 years ago. He was not
very careful about anything (i.e. he ate and drank what he wanted and
lived a pretty devil-may-care lifestyle) until recently when he began
to have complications — retinopathy and neuropathy, in particular.
Now he eats a better diet, maintains strict control of blood sugars,
and takes a lot of supplements for general health and his particular
problems.

Despite this, he has had many foot problems including intermittent
neuropathy and several foot surgeries due to ulcers that would not
heal. Most recently he lost his small toe on his left foot to
gangrene, and while the circulation has improved through the use of
additional supplements (flax oil and lecithin) he is healing very,
very slowly, and right now has an infection in the wound. He is on

DiabetesWebSite for Sale

Monday, June 9th, 2003

Probably the best Web site for people with diabetes –
www.DiabetesWebSite.com — is for sale. I have written a lot for that
site, and General Manager Michael Reynolds has authorized me to put
the word out that he’s looking for a buyer.

Either the site as a whole or its separate functionality, content, and
shopping are available for purchase.

We would like to keep this great site available to the diabetes
community. If you know anybody interesting in buying it, please ask
them to contact Michael or me.

Placebo Lowers Blood Pressure in Nearly One-Third

Placebo Lowers Blood Pressure in Nearly One-Third of Patients

This study demonstrated that 30% of patients with mild to moderate elevated
blood pressure (BP), who received a placebo, had their BP lowered to below the
set goal of a diastolic pressure of lower than 90 mm Hg.
The researchers note that this high response rate is close to those achieved
with medication and may therefore be a valuable tool, especially considering
the significant adverse effects that can occur with drugs.

In Charge Meter

Sunday, June 8th, 2003

The study took a 25 people with poorly controlled diabetes –
hemoglobin A1c tests above 8% — and randomly divided them into two
groups. They advised all of them how to get better glucose control.

Then they told 14 of them to do blood glucose tests four times a day
and come back to the clinic in three months. They told a group of 11
to test their blood glucose up to 4 times per day in addition to a
weekly fructosamine test and said to call the investigator if their
fructosamine value was above 350 micromolar (equivalent to an H1c of
7.8%), when the doctors then gave them more advice on the phone.

After 3 months all of them came back to the clinic for another H1c
test. Those who were on glucose-only testing averaged a drop in their
H1c tests from 9.4% to 9.1%, which was statistically insignificant.

OT Grandma

The other day I went up to a local Christian bookstore and saw a
"Honk If You Love Jesus" bumper sticker. I was feeling
particularly sassy that day after coming from an exhilerating choir
performance, so
I bought the sticker and put it on my bumper. Boy, am I glad I did! What
an uplifting experience that followed! I was stopped at a red light at a
busy intersection, just thinking about how wonderful the
Lord is and I didn’t notice that the light had changed. It’s a good thing
someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn’t honked, I never would have
noticed the light!
I found that LOTS of people love Jesus! While I was sitting
there, the guy behind started honking like crazy, and then he leaned out
of his window and screamed, "For the love of GOD! GO! GO! Jesus Christ,
GO!" What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus!
Everyone started honking! I just leaned out of my window and
