Re: Stop the Blame

Monday, March 17th, 2003

Hi,

In response to the comment below:

I was placed on insulin after adverse reactions to all oral medications.
Also, even though I didn’t eat any sugar whatsoever for two years and no fat
at all for one year (was finally told by dr’s office I had to have some fat
in my diet) I gained weight on the oral meds. Exercise? Hell, energy is
not something I’ve ever had.

Please don’t point blame on people with this disease. I have neuropathy in
my feet and legs as a direct result of taking insulin. Do the doctors admit
that it’s caused by insulin? Nope! No one tells you the consequences of
taking this nasty medication — not even after it’s destroyed the rest of
your body.

Hello Leoh,

<In my opionion, that is better than them offering it to me and I have to
remind them that I am a diabetic and cannot have it.>

~Do not want~ and ~cannot have~ are two (2) VERY different matters.

You can eat anything, everything on the table Leoh, only difference is two
fold.

One, you are aware of a "price" you will pay for that food…… and two you
will feel bad, if you do not balance those food groups. Eat quantities of
various foods and nutritionally it balances out, in terms of the calories
anyway.

Re: Allergic reactions to honey

Hi,

My mother is type II diabetic.

She recently had what the doctors at hospital called an anaphlactic reaction
to honey.

What happened was that suddenly in the morning she was getting ready & said
she could not breathe. I noticed her hands were swollen and I got her to
calm down a little not knowing what had happened. I drove her to hospital
where nurse immediately recognised her symptoms as one of sever allergic
reaction. Immediately they gaver her adrenaline and other things and kep her
under observation for 8 hours.

She only had honey in warm water to drink in the morning and doctors said

I think I need to unsubscribe from this list. Every one is so watchfull
of their sugars and all. I eat what I want when I want. I dont chek my
blood sugars let the dr do that every three months. Alot of times I only
get my insulin in once a day not twice. I have been verbally abused by
my husband for 6 years and if I die early due to my practices- thank
God!

Hello Maddy,

<< I am self concious about my friends and others who seem to make it a big
thing, I just want them to accept it as I have and to deal with it>>

There are many ways to cope.
Just do not tell them about "it"…. it’s your challenge NOT theirs….

Quit wearing diabetes like a tattoo? They do not have to deal with YOUR
diabetes, it’s yours, so keep it…
It’s one approach anyway…. <shrug>

"They" do not understand so explain it to them…… you can be mommy, a
cleptomaniac, an egomaniac, a nymphomaniac, a hundred other things,
good/bad, diabetes is ONLY one (1) small part of who/what you are!!!

Fasting & diabetes

Friday, March 7th, 2003

Hello Jewell,

Only caught the tail end of this conversation…..

Was this persons mom a type1 or a type2 diabetic?

Obviously type 1’s will have greater "micro-management" to do a ~fast~ ….
but no reason I can think of, why it could not be done, in either case. The
one proviso as you suggested would be the need to test just to make
CERTAIN…. everything was going along within acceptable/healthy levels
bghgl wise…

I would think it could matter what type/form of insulin she’s using as
well… If she’s injecting, the dosage would decrease, probably using the
"sick day" ~protocols~ most people use when they become nauseous, etc. But

Hi,

would like any advice anyone can give on fasting & diabetes.

My mother wants to do a fast for religious reasons next week for 8 days. She
will only be able to eat fruits, milk, cassava and potatoes. She has type ii
diabetes.

What are the dangers to her blood sugar levels as her food intake will be
drastically lowered over this period.
