Neonatal Diabetes
Hi, my name is Kelly. I just joined the list.
I have a son (now 5 months old) that was born with Neonatal
Transient Diabetes. He was born at 39 wks. gest. and weighed
3 lbs-14oz, 16 in. long. The day after he was born the
medical staff received his lab results, concluding that is
blood sugar was over 400. The staff began to panic because
they had "never" seen this before! I , needless to say, was
very worried about this! They consulted with the best
diabetes specialists in the state (which I must also add,
had never seen this before either)! I began to worry. I
guess my son was the youngest child in the state of Utah to
have this disease!
All of the medical staff at the the hospital was scared to
send him home with us because they didn’t know how stable he
would be. He ended up being discharged from the NICU after
being there for 3 1/2 weeks.
We had to give him insulin regular that was diluted and it
had to be given before every meal - every 3 hrs. He had
very sporatic blood sugars and stayed on a sliding scale,
which seemed to change every week as I talked to the
specialists on the phone every Monday to report his blood
sugars.
About 3 weeks after being released from the hospital his
Diabetes went into remission. We were told that there is a
50-50 chance of it coming back as Type I Diabetes in
childhood. We can only hope and pray that it won’t.
We have no Type I Diabetes on either sides of our family.
Must just be a fluke.
My Question is: Is there anyone else out there with a child
this young with Diabetes? And what was your situation like?
Thanks
Kelly
